The Youngest Treasure Hunter
"It went beep, beep mommy!” said the Youngest Treasure Hunter!
You’re never too young to treasure hunt. James Hyatt found a 500-year-old gold pendant, valued at 4 million dollars, when he was only 3 years old! This young treasure hunter had gone out treasure hunting with his dad one day. He was using his dad’s metal detector and navigating through the fields in Hockley, Essex when he said the detector went “beep, beep, beep!”
Metal detecting has been James’ father’s hobby for 15 years, but he’d never found anything big like the pendant that James found.
The pendant bore the image of the Virgin Mary, which led experts to believe that it was made during the 16th century, around the time of King Henry VIII. The pendant was believed to have belonged to one of the members of the royal family.
James’ parents have always considered him to be lucky. They said he would do things like go to a doctor’s appointment, stick his hands in the side of the couch and retrieve money.
In describing the find in his own words, James said, “we dug into the mud and there was gold there. We didn’t have a map; only pirates have treasure maps.”
Who says that you can’t do anything when you’re young? James has certainly set the bar for being the youngest treasure hunter ever in history and has given the phrase, “beginner’s luck” a whole new meaning!
Pendant made of gold. Experts believed that the pendant was made during a prehistoric age called the Neolithic era.
What is so interesting about the find is that experts didn’t think that people of that age had been using metal yet, let alone gold. The pendant the hiker found shed new light on what we know about the Neolithic age. It seems that people from that era were more advanced than what had been thought.Since the pendant find, two other similar artefacts have been found and 25 other prehistoric settlements have been unearthed around the area.
Thessaloniki is a place with a treasure trove of ancient artefacts may be waiting to be discovered. Even more rare is that the hiker who found the gold pendant refused to be indentified and she refused any reward for what she found. She just wanted to make sure that the artefact treasure was properly handled and taken care of.
A number of valuable treasure finds have been discovered by amateur treasure hunters.
Cliff Bradshaw was one such lucky treasure hunter. In 2001, he stumbled upon a golden cup buried just 18 inches below the ground! The cup which was believed to be around 4000 years old and created at about the time that Stonehenge was mysteriously formed.
The cup which is now known as the Ringlemere Gold Cup, was found near Sandwich in Kent County. It had been badly damaged by recent ploughing.
It is believed the cup was used in rituals and had been perfectly shaped and formed from a single lump of gold.
It now rests at the British Museum where a team of experts have already determined its value to be a quarter of a million pounds.
The Ringlemere Cup was listed as number 10 in the list of Top 10 British archaeological finds chosen by experts at the British Museum for a 2003 BBC TV documentary.
The Ringlemere Cup is certainly a treasure to be marvelled at.

Amateur Treasure Hunters find a Mighty Viking Treasure!
With their long, dragon-headed ships and bull-horned helmets, the mighty Vikings are described by history as violent raiders from the sea. Whatever they were during the ancient times, Viking stories have been a favorite adventure story theme for children all over the world. Their legendary conquests and journeys from Scandinavia to the North Atlantic and Russia are now written as timeless pieces of history.
Vikings came from the countries of Norway, Denmark and Sweden. These mighty pirates conquered Britain, Scotland and Ireland. Their conquests left treasure trails throughout Europe and Russia. There are several accounts of Viking treasures found and dug up in different places across Europe.
A hoard of Viking treasure is found
In 2007, David Whelan with his son Andrew found a major hoard of Viking treasures in Harrogate, North York Shire in England. The father and son team are amateur treasure hunters who go out on weekends on fields and beach shores with their metal detectors.
Finally, after five long years of waiting for that magical “beep” they discovered something big one Saturday morning. After digging roughly 17 inches, the beeping sound of the metal detector became a determined and sure signal. The Whelan’s found a bowl with silver coins and scraps. They were very excited to find out more! But David and Andrew didn’t want to accidentally destroy any valuable piece of history. So they alerted the authorities and waited until professionals arrived to assist them unearth what is probably the largest hoard of Viking treasure ever found!
True Viking gold and treasures
The find contained 617 silver coins and 65 valuable items such as a gold arm band, dress ornaments, silver rings and brooches. The coins were from as far as Samarkand in Central Asia, Afghanistan, Russia, Scandinavia and North Africa. There was even one rare coin with the inscription Rex Totius Brittaniae, which means, King of the Whole Britain. It is actually the first time that a king claimed to be the king of the whole of Britain.
The treasure was estimated to be over 1 million pounds or probably more. The proceeds will be shared by the Whelan’s and the land owner. It is truly a treasure worth the long wait.
The Vikings were indeed mighty. And the treasures they left behind capture our imagination of what their time must have been like!
